The Georgian government has extended the temporary duty on the import of flour, barley, and bran from Russia until March 1, 2025, in an effort to support local farmers and balance competing tariffs on imported wheat. The duty, which was initially implemented in summer 2023, has been extended multiple times due to its effectiveness in providing a stable market for Georgian farmers and maintaining competition among local flour mills. The duty ranges from 0.1 to 0.25 GEL per kilogram, depending on the imported good, and has allowed Georgian mills to resume production after facing crises due to fluctuating export duties on wheat from Russia.
