The reopening of Japanese restaurants after COVID-19 has led to a renewed demand for high-value bluefin tuna, while yellowfin tuna is being replaced by cheaper salmon in sushi. Fresh tuna imports in the United States increased by 7% in the first quarter of 2023, with the European Union importing over 1,000 tons of fresh tuna during this period, with bluefin and yellowfin tuna imports increasing. Additionally, there has been an increase in demand for fresh bluefin tuna in China and Thailand, with both countries experiencing significant import growth. However, the international trade in frozen tuna fillets weakened in early 2023, with declines in imports in Japan, the United States, and the European Union, but increased in emerging markets in Southeast Asia and Europe. Vietnam, Indonesia, the Republic of Korea, Spain, and China are the largest exporters of frozen tuna fillets.
