Spain: Good prices for the early watermelons from Almería

The report of the Andalusian Observatory for Prices and Markets on greenhouse cultivation in Almería in week 16 confirms in black and white what the growers already said about the prices for the watermelons at the start of the new season: nice average prices are being paid. The first quantities were sold for higher prices than last season. In week 16, for example, the average price for the striped watermelon was € 0.57 per kilo, for the mini watermelon at € 0.49 per kilo and for the black seedless variety at € 0.80 per kilo. The Observatory points out that the supply of watermelons from third countries is not abundant. "According to industry experts, the acreage in Senegal is lower than last season, when quality problems forced the African country to cut back exports and sell a large part of its harvest on the domestic market."
