The Secretary of State for Agriculture in Portugal is planning to create a network of warnings for chestnut tree cultivation to provide producers with a timely response and clarify the causes of the recent production drops in Brazil nuts, a primary income source for many families in the Padrela Protected Designation of Origin (DOP) area. The proposed network will identify the root cause, either septoria fungus or cold temperatures, to enable preventive measures. The network will also consider other possible factors and involve the ministry and farmers' organizations. The Secretary is also evaluating potential support schemes for affected producers.
