[Korea Farmers and Fishermen Newspaper, Reporter Song Hae-chang] Governor Kim Tae-heum of South Chungcheong Province expressed his opposition to the Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs' 'Basic Income Pilot Project for Rural and Fishing Villages.' Governor Kim held a press conference at the provincial government office and emphasized, "I usually hold the conviction that universal welfare is populism. In the same vein, I believe the rural basic income policy is also like that." According to the province, the rural basic income is a system that provides a fixed amount of money regularly without conditions to all residents in regions facing a population decline crisis. The government plans to select six counties through a public call from 69 counties in areas with declining populations across the country as a pilot project, and then provide 150,000 won per person per month for two years.
