The Indian government has initiated the second phase of retail sales of wheat flour and rice under the Bharat brand at subsidized prices to offset high market rates. The sales will be conducted through cooperatives and e-commerce platforms, with wheat flour priced at Rs 30 per kg and rice at Rs 34 per kg in 5kg and 10kg packs. The government has allocated a total of 6.60 lakh tonnes of these staples from the Food Corporation of India for this retail intervention, which will continue until the stock runs out. The pricing strategy is aimed at providing relief to consumers rather than focusing on sales, as the government also plans to investigate why prices are stable despite surplus rice stocks.
