The Zimbabwean government aims to significantly boost its agricultural output by targeting the cultivation of 120,000 hectares of wheat and 7,000 hectares of barley in the upcoming winter season. To facilitate this ambitious goal, US$27 million will be invested in rehabilitating irrigation schemes on underutilized farms, as announced by Lands, Water, Agriculture, and Rural Development Minister Anxious Masuka. This initiative is supported by partnerships with banks and the private sector for the procurement of necessary irrigation equipment and the formation of an inter-ministerial taskforce to tackle the energy crisis, ensuring uninterrupted irrigation. This plan follows a successful harvest in 2023, where wheat production exceeded domestic demand, marking a significant step towards agricultural self-sufficiency.
