The Indonesian government is initiating a seaweed farming pilot project in Wakatobi, Southeast Sulawesi, which will be a model for similar initiatives across the country. The project will emphasize environmental sustainability by replacing plastic ropes with reusable coconut fiber ropes. The Ministry of Marine and Fisheries will support seaweed farmers with capital and provide affordable loans. The ministry's goal is to have domestic aquaculture products dominate the export market within the next five to ten years, focusing on shrimp, lobster, crab, seaweed, and tilapia.
