The Bulgarian Food Safety Agency has introduced new measures to curb the spread of small ruminant pox in certain Bulgarian regions from October 18 to November 30, 2024. In Yambol, Haskovo, and Stara Zagora, restrictions are placed on the grazing, trade, and movement of small ruminants, except for immediate slaughter or transit, which requires examination and permits. In Burgas, Kardjali, Smolyan, Blagoevgrad, and Sliven, slaughter is allowed under similar conditions, but grazing is permitted. Enhanced biosecurity and control measures are in place, with epizootic commissions working to prevent disease spread. The disease is not a threat to humans but poses significant risks to sheep and goats, potentially leading to economic losses.
