Sonora, Mexico is a major contributor to the country's vegetable production, accounting for 5% of the national garlic production and being the fourth largest garlic producer in Mexico with an production of 4,318 tons. The region is also a significant producer of other vegetables such as chives, broccoli, and asparagus, with high quality produce that is in demand in the United States, Canada, and Europe. The superior quality of these vegetables, especially chives, has made San Luis Río Colorado a key supply point for the United States despite being planted in neighboring countries. In 2020, the region planted 485 hectares out of over 800 scheduled, produced 19,753 tons of broccoli with a yield of 22 tons per hectare, and harvested 41,338 tons of asparagus with a yield of 11.8 tons per hectare. Additionally, 6,105 tons of lettuce were produced in 2020 on 284 hectares.
