Peru's legume industry, renowned for producing high-value beans, is struggling to reach its full potential due to several challenges, as highlighted during the National Legumes Day. Jorge Fernández Gil, the president of the Committee on Beans and Other Grains of the Association of Exporters (ADEX), called for increased public-private collaboration and a proactive approach to boost the industry's competitiveness. He stressed the importance of improving internal processes, providing better training to producers, adding more value to products, and diversifying the offer. Despite the challenges, Peruvian legume exports, including a variety of beans and pigeon beans, remained significant, with the United States being the primary market. However, there was a slight decrease in exports from January to May of this year compared to the same period in 2023, with the pallar being the leading product.
