Heavy rains destroy silverskin onion crops in Tamil Nadu, India

Heavy rains in six districts since November in Tamil Nadu state have ruined silver onion production. An estimated 80% of the onion crop has been destroyed by the unexpected rainfall. As a result, prices are skyrocketing in several districts of the state. Silverskin onions are also known as Sambhar onions, small onions and baby onions. They come in both red-purple and white varieties. The villages of Velur, Chathiramanai, Vanapady, Kalarampatti, Chettikulam, Irur, Alathurgate, Padalur and Sridevimangalam in the districts of Perambalur, Tiruchirappalli and Tiruvallur were some of the areas where the harvest of silverskin onions was severely affected by the rains.
