Indonesia is looking to sago as an alternative food source Amidst the threat of a food crisis. The country has 11 provinces serving as national centers of sago production, with Riau, Papua, Maluku, and South Sulawesi being the largest contributors. The potential national sago area is 5.5 million ha, but only 3.5 percent is currently being cultivated. The Ministry of Agriculture has provided assistance to the South Sulawesi Provincial Government to develop sago processing in the region. The Cheap Food Movement is also being implemented in South Sulawesi to ensure food availability and diversify local food sources.
