The article highlights the challenges and issues facing the Hungarian seed sector, as discussed by Géza Takács, the president of the Seed Association Interprofessional Organization and Product Council (VSZT). Despite initial delays, seeds have been delivered to farmers, though there's a gap in the recommended renewal rate for winter wheat inspections. Hungary's reliance on metal-sealed seeds is lower than other European countries, impacting crop quality. The expansion in sown areas and favorable weather conditions for autumn sowings are noted. However, the seed sector faces challenges such as reduced exports to Russia and Ukraine, economic and plant protection issues, and the 12-15 year, capital-intensive process of developing new seeds. Hungarian seed production is increasingly dominated by multinational companies, with domestic companies struggling for funding and few large Hungarian seed production plants remaining.
