In February 2023, the Netherlands experienced a 26.3% increase in egg prices compared to the previous year, resulting in historically high prices largely due to a significant rise in chicken feed costs and avian flu reducing supply. This trend of increasing egg prices was seen not just in the Netherlands but across the European Union and the United States, with the EU witnessing a 31.1% average increase and the US seeing a 55.4% increase. The Netherlands imported eggs from Ukraine and continued to export more eggs than it imported, with a value of nearly 1.5 billion euros in 2022, primarily to Germany.
