Local hog producers have appealed to the Tariff Commission (TC) to review the extended tariff rates on imported frozen edible offal, arguing that it has led to smuggling and misdeclaration of imported animal meats. They also called on the Department of Agriculture to establish the first border inspection facility to prevent these issues. The TC is studying the impact of tariff policies on national competitiveness and consumer welfare, following a directive from Senator Cynthia A. Villar. Meanwhile, the Department of Agriculture has not implemented a P2.5 billion budget for the construction of first border inspection facilities in major cities, as planned.
