Brazil: IDR-Paraná project revolutionizes virus-free garlic production

The presence of viruses in garlic crops is a significant challenge that can severely compromise crop productivity and profitability. In Paraná, where the supply of garlic seeds is limited and costly, especially for family farmers, the Institute of Rural Development of Paraná (IDR-Paraná) has been leading the "Virus-Free Garlic" project since two years ago, in collaboration with Embrapa-Hortaliças of the Federal District. This project aims to provide farmers with access to high-quality seeds and knowledge about advanced techniques for multiplying these materials. Currently, the project operates with 6 screens dedicated to the production of virus-free garlic seeds in 5 municipalities, in addition to 33 reference units distributed in 24 municipalities in Paraná. Each unit, measuring 100 square meters on average, is installed on farmers' properties and protected by screens that prevent the entry of virus-carrying insects.
