(Iksan=Yonhap News) Reporter Kim Jin-bang = Jeonbuk Iksan City announced on the 30th that it has been selected for the "Vegetable Shipment Control Facility Support Project" led by the Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs.

This project aims to stabilize the supply and demand of open-field vegetables such as onions, napa cabbage, and garlic, which have significant fluctuations in production volume and price. The core content is the construction of large-scale low-temperature storage facilities and equipment to directly control shipments from the production site.

The city plans to build a facility with a total area of 4,602 square meters on a 15,791 square meter site in Yongseong-ri, Yongdong-myeon, in collaboration with the Iksan Horticultural Farmers Association. Specifically, it will include a low-temperature storage room (3,360 square meters), a pre-cooling facility (242 square meters), and a pretreatment facility (175 square meters).

Once the facility is completed in 2027, it will be able to store and control the shipment of over 5,000 tons of onions annually.

Iksan is a major onion production area, producing over 14,700 tons of onions from an area of about 200 hectares annually. Although the cultivation area is large, the lack of storage facilities has led to problems such as waste in the production area or price collapse during overproduction, causing instability in farmers' income.

The city expects that once the shipment control facility is operational, the storage and management of onions will be systematized, alleviating supply and demand imbalances and creating a distribution environment where farmers can receive fair prices.

Iksan Mayor Jeong Heon-yul said, "The construction of this shipment control facility is an important turning point for improving the quality of onions and establishing a stable supply system. It will enhance the brand value of Iksan as a major onion production area and lay the foundation for farmers to produce with peace of mind."
