In 2021, Germany's fruit and vegetable imports decreased slightly from the record-breaking 2020 levels, totaling 8.8 million tons, the same as three years prior. The decrease was primarily due to reduced imports from Spain and the Netherlands, with Spain's imports falling by 15% to 2.8 million tons and the Netherlands' imports dropping by 5%. Italy, Costa Rica, Ecuador, Poland, Belgium, South Africa, France, Turkey, Morocco, Portugal, and Mexico were the top suppliers.
Bananas remained the most imported product in Germany, followed by mandarins. While imports of major products like tomatoes, cucumbers, apples, oranges, and watermelons decreased, there was an increase in the imports of mangoes, leeks, ginger, asparagus, and celery. The imports from the Netherlands were dominated by greenhouse vegetables and banana re-exports, which experienced a 16% growth. Despite the overall decrease, Germany imported more pears, leeks, and grapes from the Netherlands.
