Turkey is set to see a significant increase in potato production in 2023 due to record-breaking seed potato imports, with the Netherlands being the primary supplier. This comes after the Turkish government's decision to ban potato exports due to high domestic prices, leading to a drop in exports. The rise in production is anticipated to lower prices and possibly expand export markets, potentially impacting Georgian growers. In contrast, Uzbekistan, a major global potato importer, could diversify its sources by including Turkey. Meanwhile, extreme weather conditions have affected the European potato industry, leading to high prices. Ireland is planning to distribute potato planting stock to 10,000 Ukrainian farms through the FAO, and Washington State University has found the optimal row distance for potatoes in the Columbia River basin. The EU is also funding a project to edit potato genes to boost photosynthesis and improve crop resilience.
