The National Institute of Agrarian Innovation (INIA) of Peru has stored over 14,500 samples of crops, breeding, and microorganisms in 46 germplasm banks across 17 regions. These collections, which include 280 species of crops and their wild relatives, are preserved through unique conservation methods and registered in the Genetic Resources Information System (SIRGE). The institute is using these genetic resources to develop new technologies and create improved crop lines, hybrids, or varieties. The germplasm banks are distributed across various Peruvian ecosystems, including Cusco, Cajamarca, Ayacucho, Ica, San Martín, Puno, Lima, Junín, Ucayali, Loreto, Arequipa, Lambayeque, Tumbes, Tacna, Piura, Madre de Dios, and Amazonas.
