As of February 1, 2024, Germany has implemented new meat labeling regulations requiring the packaging of bulk fresh, chilled or frozen pork, lamb, goat or poultry meat to indicate the origin of the goods. This change, which previously only applied to unpackaged beef and packaged goods, is expected to benefit small-scale livestock farmers and enable consumers to choose locally produced products. The potential for a similar labeling rule across the European Union is also being explored.
