The agricultural cooperative, Velika Slavova, in the Silistra village of Prof. Ishirkovo, has started the selection of early apricot varieties, with an initial yield of about 200 tons from the ZK "Niva - 93" variety, expecting to increase to 1200 tons as the harvest progresses. The cooperative is the largest producer of apricots in the region, also cultivating plums, cherries, and peaches across 1600 decares. However, early apricot yields are lower due to spring frosts. The market is currently receptive to apricots, with prices ranging from BGN 1-1.20 per kilogram, and there is high demand for sunflower due to weaker harvests in neighboring countries. Despite these challenges, the cooperative is managing to harvest other crops such as wheat, alfalfa, and experiencing a tight labor market, necessitating the hiring of many regional workers for the manual labor-intensive apricot harvest.
