India is set to obtain the Geographical Indication (GI) Tag for Basmati rice in the European Union (EU) as the deadline for resolving the dispute with Pakistan approaches on September 10th. This will allow India to market the rice as "Basmati" in the EU, preventing other countries, such as Pakistan, from using the name. The decision is expected to favor India, especially as Pakistan has only opposed the GI tag, rather than applying for one himself. The Agricultural and Processed Food Products Export Development Authority (APEDA) has been advocating for India's position in international forums. In the event of a disagreement between India and Pakistan, the issue may be referred to the EU court. India has also initiated negotiations for a free trade deal with the EU.
