India's oilseed farmers are seeking government intervention to support local farmers by increasing the import tax on palm oil. The farmers' council has requested Prime Minister Narendra Modi to address the drop in domestic rapeseed prices, which have fallen below the government's minimum support price. The government is also urged to buy rapeseed at guaranteed prices to provide immediate relief. Last year, India removed the basic import tax on crude palm oil but maintains a 5% tax on imports. The country's annual vegetable oil imports cost around US$18 billion.
