The Indonesian Flour Manufacturers Association, or APTINDO, signed a memorandum of understanding with US Wheat Associates on July 7, committing to purchase 1 million tons of American wheat annually from 2026 to 2030, according to US Wheat Associates and market sources.
Joseph Sowers, regional vice president of US Wheat Associates for South and Southeast Asian markets, said the Memorandum of Understanding was a "significant milestone for Indonesia's flour industry and wheat producers in the United States".
It stated that under the agreement, APTINDO committed to doubling its annual wheat purchases from the US over the next five years.
Over the past decade, annual wheat imports from the US to Indonesia historically averaged just under 1 million tons until 2020, but after that, imports sharply declined, with annual import volumes averaging 481,023 tons from 2021 to 2024, according to data from the Indonesian Bureau of Statistics.
