The Indonesian government has announced plans to import around 2 million tons of rice by the end of 2023 in an effort to stabilize rising prices and support food for its people. This follows a successful initial import of 500,000 tons from December 2022. The rice will be used in the country's Food Supply and Price Stabilization Program and to support over 21 million families receiving government social aid. The decision to import comes as the national rice reserve has run low, with only about 220,000 tons available, and domestic rice prices continuing to rise. Vietnam and Thailand were the largest suppliers on the previous import.
