Deforestation in Indonesia, the world's largest palm oil producer, has increased for the second year in a row, reversing a decade-long decline. A significant portion of this deforestation occurred on carbon-rich peatlands, exacerbating greenhouse gas emissions. The company Ciliandry Anky Abadi (CAA), associated with the Indonesian conglomerate First Resources, has been identified as a major contributor to this deforestation. Accusations have been made against First Resources for using 'shadow companies' to evade sustainability standards. The company, a member of the Roundtable on Sustainable Palm Oil (RSPO), is facing fresh allegations from a coalition of Indonesian civil society organizations for potential breaches of RSPO Group Membership rules.
