The government's plan to shift the import of raw materials for refined sugar from private companies to state-owned enterprises (SOEs) has garnered various responses from industry players. This policy was previously highlighted in the VI Commission's Public Hearing Meeting of the DPR on April 8, 2026, with the aim of curbing the leakage of refined sugar into the consumer market, reducing losses of Sugar Co, and promoting national sugar self-sufficiency. Executive Director of the Indonesian Sugar Association (AGI) Budi Hidayat assessed that even though Sugar Co is an SOE, the entity still operates as a business entity, so there is no direct mechanism for the government to cover losses through import diversion.
