Since 2024, Iowa has experienced seven outbreaks of Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza (HPAI). Recent developments have seen HPAI detected in commercial layer and turkey flocks in Palo Alto County, with six cases confirmed between December 8 and 11. The Iowa Department of Agriculture and Land Stewardship (IDALS) is advising producers and dairy farmers on biosecurity to prevent further spread, noting potential impact on dairy herds. IDALS also stated that with proper care, dairy herds can recover from the disease. Iowa Governor Kim Reynolds has declared a disaster proclamation to expedite regulatory processes and support in managing and monitoring the outbreak.
