From Mar. 21, 2022, to Jan. 20, the Iranian customs administration reports a significant trade activity in saffron, with 178 tons exported to 59 countries, valued at $172.75 million. The United Arab Emirates emerged as the leading consumer, importing 54 tons worth $61.73 million. Spain and China ranked second and third with 35 tons and 28 tons imported, respectively, valued at $38 million and $32 million respectively. Despite producing over 90% of the world's saffron, Iran's global market share is not commensurate with its production due to the bulk reexport of the spice by customers after repackaging.
