Uzbekistan is planning to expand its pomegranate plantations significantly, with plans to increase the area in the Surkhandarya region to 300 thousand tons annually, potentially reaching 600 thousand tons in the next 5-10 years. However, the success of these plans may face challenges due to the climate, high yield expectations, and the focus on local varieties. The country currently exports 10-15 thousand tons of fresh pomegranates annually, mainly to the countries of the former USSR, but is looking to expand to South Korea and the UAE. The global pomegranate market is expected to grow at a rate similar to avocado, driven by its high antioxidant content and demand for 'superfood' properties.
