Italy is facing a severe honey shortage due to a combined impact of climate change and price speculation. National production has fallen by 95% in some regions, with honey production in Tuscany and Emilia-Romagna severely affected. Adverse climatic conditions have led to the near-elimination of acacia honey in Sicily and Puglia, and decreased production of other honey types. The situation has been worsened by thermal shocks, compromised blooms, and challenges in storing and collecting nectar. Additionally, the quality and origin of imported honey, which makes up 85% of the market, are under suspicion. The primary suppliers are Hungary, Spain, and China, with concerns about the transparency of their production practices and the honey's true country of origin.
