The Philippines is introducing a new improved duck breed called Itik PINAS (IP), developed by the Department of Science and Technology-Philippine Council for Agriculture, Aquatic, and Natural Resources Research and Development (DOST-PCAARRD) and the National Swine and Poultry Research and Development Center-Bureau of Animal Industry (NSPRDC-BAI). This breed is disease resistant, suited to the local climate, and lays more eggs than the traditional Pateros duck. The IP breed is expected to benefit around half a million Filipino families who rely on ducks for their livelihood. The government is also exploring other products from ducks, such as balut, salted eggs, salted egg powder, and culled layer duck meat, which have both cultural and nutritional value and potential for commercialization.
