The Australian seafood industry, represented by Seafood Industry Australia (SIA), has applauded the Senate inquiry into the labelling of alternative protein products, emphasizing the importance of protecting the definition of seafood. SIA CEO Veronica Papacosta emphasized that misleading labelling of plant-based products as animal-based proteins confuses consumers, undermines the industry, and threatens its sustainability. The industry is concerned about the potential for allergic reactions from soy proteins and the misleadingly similar packaging of plant-based and seafood products. Additionally, SIA emphasized the need for food traceability and sustainability claims to maintain the value and exportability of their products.
