The House of Representatives in Japan is considering a proposal to approve the UK Economic Partnership Agreement (EPA), which is similar in content to the EU EPA but does not include import quotas for the UK. The agreement is expected to be effective from January 1, 2021. The Foreign Affairs Committee has discussed the impact of the agreement on 25 products with import quotas in the European EPA, and how the UK will face lower tariffs for these products if there is surplus quota in the European EPA. The activation of emergency import restriction measures against the EU is also under discussion.
