Strawberry exports have reached a milestone, generating over 1 billion yen in February, the first time this has happened in a single month. The exports, which include high-quality strawberries, were shipped to several countries including Hong Kong, Singapore, Thailand, Taiwan, and the United States. The export volume increased significantly in 2014, peaking at 1237 tons in 2018, despite a drop in 2019 due to logistical issues and a poor harvest. Despite distribution being three to six times the domestic price, the strawberries are popular among the wealthy due to their large size and taste. The Japanese government is actively promoting the expansion of forestry, marine products, and food exports, setting a target of 8.6 billion yen in strawberry exports in 2013 and designating 12 production areas as 'export production areas' to strengthen the foundation and maintain quality for increased export volume.
