A new agreement has been reached between Japan and Russia for salmon fishing in the exclusive economic zone of Japan, off the southern part of Hokkaido prefecture. The conditions for Japanese fishing are negotiable due to the spawning of most fish in Russian rivers. The annual quota is set at 2,050 tons, and Japan will pay Russia for assistance, the amount of which depends on the size of the catch. The agreement was reached following online negotiations and resolves issues that arose last year due to the Russian invasion of Ukraine.
