Between January and April 2024, the United States imported $50.8 million worth of Japanese scallops, marking a 28% increase from the same period in 2023, despite a 24% drop in average price per kilogram. Imports of Canadian scallops also saw a significant rise. The surge in Japanese scallop imports is due to a reduced US Atlantic scallop harvest and China's ban on Japanese seafood following the Fukushima water discharge. Japan is expected to continue focusing on the US as its primary export market for scallops.
