South Korea: Jeju considers ‘green onion’ as new income crop

The possibility of 'chicken greens' becoming a new income crop in Jeju is being reviewed. The Jeju Special Self-Governing Province Agricultural Technology Center (Director Seung-Hyeon Kim) announced that it plans to examine the possibility of greenhouse vegetable hydroponic cultivation and income generation targeting chives, a major crop in the eastern region. According to the Eastern Agricultural Technology Center, as of 2022, the total area of chive cultivation in Jeju is 455 ha, including 272 ha of leaf chives and 183 ha of bulb chives. In the eastern part of Jeju, bulb chives are mainly produced, but there is a problem that farm income is unstable due to the significant impact of environmental changes such as weather.
