The Dongbu Agricultural Technology Center of the Jeju Special Self-Governing Province Agricultural Technology Institute (Director Kim Su-mi) is expanding its "Demonstration Project for Dissemination of New Machinery-Harvested Sesame Varieties" to enhance the competitiveness of sesame cultivation, which has been shrinking due to a shortage of labor, and to improve the winter vegetable farming system. Previously, sesame was a crop with a high dependency on labor during the harvest process, and due to the lack of rural labor and other factors, the cultivation area in the province decreased by 63.3% from 629 hectares in 2019 to 231 hectares in 2024. The entire process of the previous cultivation, including picking, bundling, transporting, drying, and threshing, relied on manual labor, and approximately 32.6 hours of labor were required for every 10 ares. The Dongbu Agricultural Technology Center is working to solve these problems.
