South Korea: Jeju, new variety of green bean ‘Haechan’ farm verification

Farm verification of the new variety of green bean ‘Haechan’ is being promoted. The Jeju Special Self-Governing Provincial Agricultural Research and Extension Services (Director Sang-Hwan Ko) announced that it will promote farm demonstrations using ‘Haechan’, a new variety of green bean that matures quickly and can be harvested by machine, in three major green bean producing regions in Jeju. According to the Provincial and Rural Development Institute, the soybean cultivation area in Jeju is 4,890ha as of 2022, with most of the cultivation being mainly green soybeans. Production volume is 3,933 tons, accounting for 80% of domestic green soybean production. Pungsan green beans, the main cultivar cultivated in the Jeju region, mature quickly, but their pods hang low, making mechanical harvesting difficult.
