Jump in tomato and pepper imports, Albanian watermelons are also coming

Although the exports of tomatoes and peppers are decreasing, on the contrary we see their imports increasing. In the last few days we have also had a movement with imports of watermelons from Albania. We see more and more consumers in our country this summer buying imported tomatoes and peppers, as a result of which local productions are out of the market. The government is a mere observer of this image in the market, which in essence devalues domestic production. Mr. Georgios Polychronakis, Special Advisor of the Incofruit - Hellas Exporters Association, reports to AgroTypos that "the data show that tomato exports, for the period 1/1/2024-26/7/2024, are estimated to have reached 28,300 tons, against 30,900 tons in the corresponding period of 2023 (decrease by -7.4%). However, the tomato imports, from July 1 until today, which amount to approximately 1,400 tons, make an impression.
