Farmers in Kilwa, Tanzania, are facing challenges in selling seaweed due to low prices and lack of market infrastructure. The unit price of exported seaweed from Zanzibar has decreased by 82.2% from December 2020 to December 2021. The seaweed farming sector, predominantly women-led, employs over 3430 farmers, 95% of whom are women. The district produces 600,000 tons of seaweed annually, with the majority exported unprocessed to countries such as the Philippines and Thailand. Farmers are facing challenges such as shortages of inputs, storage facilities, and transport, and are calling for government intervention in pricing and construction of market infrastructure. The district is providing loans, trainings, and linking farmers to markets, while the Ministry of Livestock and Fisheries is offering ropes and other inputs for seaweed farming.
