Portuguese soldiers are helping with cleanup and restoring power in Leiria following the passage of Storm Kristin. About 240 members of the armed forces are working with emergency services and local authorities to assist affected communities. The soldiers have been deployed to the site since Wednesday. They are clearing roads and cutting, chipping fallen trees. Another contingent is on standby to provide logistical and coordination support. The Portuguese government has extended the state of emergency until February 8, the day of the presidential election. Prime Minister Luís Montenegro said that families whose homes were damaged could receive up to ten thousand euros for rebuilding. "The government has decided to establish support for the rebuilding of own and permanent homes, with an intervention of up to 10 thousand euros, for each family, without documentation, and in all cases where insurance will not be applicable," announced the Portuguese prime minister.
