Ancestral activity allowed the capture and shearing of vicuñas in Huamachuco, with a sustainable focus and commercial projection

The Regional Government of La Libertad, through the Regional Management of Agriculture, was an active participant in the 2025 edition of the Vicuña Chaccu, held on the Huaylillas hill and the slopes of the Cushuro lagoon, located in the district of Huamachuco, Sánchez Carrión province. This ancestral activity is characterized by the capture and shearing of vicuñas, with a focus on sustainability and environmental conservation. On this occasion, 128 captures were made from a population of over 400 vicuñas. The 27 shearings carried out generated more than 3.5 kilos of vicuña fiber, the conservation of which will allow for its subsequent commercialization. This festivity not only has cultural and economic significance but also highlights the importance of preserving biodiversity and defending ancestral traditions.
