The European Union's rapid alert system, RASFF, reported 580 alerts during the 2023/2024 marketing season due to high pesticide levels in fruit and vegetables, with 22.4% of these alerts attributed to imports from Turkey. The most common source of contamination was peppers imported from Turkey, which led to the destruction of many consignments at the EU border. Other countries like Egypt, Spain, Italy, Morocco, Greece, France, and the Netherlands also contributed to the problem. The majority of the alerts were processed by Bulgarian control authorities, highlighting the need for increased phytosanitary control as EU fruit and vegetable imports, particularly from Turkey, continue to rise.
