The 2021 South African wine grape harvest saw an 8.9% increase from the previous year, totaling approximately 1.46 million tonnes. The season was delayed due to cool weather conditions, allowing the grapes to develop superior colour and flavour. The harvest is projected to yield around 1.1 billion litres of wine, including juice and concentrate. The industry expects high-quality wines due to excellent colour extraction, low pH levels, and high natural acidity, under normal conditions. The alcohol export and local sale restrictions from 2020 to 2021 resulted in a significant wine stock buildup, now presenting challenges for producers and wineries to sell the existing stock alongside the new harvest in a responsible and sustainable manner. This situation also offers opportunities for innovation and market growth.
