The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) report reveals that Latin America and the Caribbean is the second-largest producer of aquaculture, with a total production of 4.3 million tons in 2022, accounting for 3.3% of the world's total. Chile and Ecuador are the region's leaders, contributing 53% to the total aquaculture production. Global trade in aquatic products reached $195 billion in 2022, with China, Norway, and Vietnam being the leading exporters. The report also emphasizes the need for sustainable aquaculture and the effective management of fisheries to meet the food security needs and to combat poverty. The region's per capita consumption of seafood is lower than the global average and needs to increase by 13% to maintain current consumption levels by 2050.
