In 2023, Latvia saw a significant increase in grain imports from Russia, with a 59.9% rise from the previous year, totaling 423,732 tons and valued at 89.008 million euros. The State Revenue Service (SRS) noted that these imports become European Union goods and can circulate freely within the EU. Additionally, grain products transited from Russia through Latvia also increased 2.2 times from 2022, reaching 2.137 million tons. Despite political tensions, Latvian businesses continue to trade in Russian grain and food products, which are not subject to EU sanctions against Russia.
